Ittoqqortoormiit, East Greenland

My sister Astrid and I went to Greenland to visit out mother for the month of July 2007. She works in the little town of Ittoqqortoormiit as a nurse.

July 28th 2007

Spækhoved and Tot are two naughty husky twins and always hungry! The town is full of young dogs.

Mum's house is the red one above the church with the satellite dish. In the winter the snow reaches the windows.

Finally the supply ship from Denmark arrived. The ice made it difficult to unload the containers but in the end they suceeded and now the shop is full of fresh fruit and vegetables for a few days.

M/S Arina Artica is a 283 TEU container ship build in Frederikshavn. She carries a helicopter aft for ice observations.

The temperature here is about 15 degrees C and between all the rocks there are lots of little Arctic flowers.

The kids play in the stream which is VERY cold!

Today the weather was nice so we went for a walk to the "Hvalrosbugten" (walrus bay).

This picture of the iceberg is taken at midnight. The iceberg is caught in the sea ice and has been stuck in the same place all winter.

After a long trip via Iceland my sister Astrid and I have finally reached Ittoqqortoormiit (impossible to spell and pronounce) - a little village on the East Coast of Greenland where our mother works as a nurse.

In Iceland we went riding on the small, dusty Icelandic Horses.

In Greenland the weather is nice and the sun shines 24 hours a day. First we landed in Kulusuk International Airport and then we proceeded to Constable Point.

In Constable Point we found out that the helicopter was broken. Fortunately we were LUCKY to get a ride to Ittoqqortoormiit with a small helicopter from Mestersvig.

The village of Ittoqqortoormiit. The ice is almost about to break up, which is good since the supply ship is coming next week. It has been almost a year since the last ship was here, so everybody is looking forward to its arrival.
