Mediterranean to Middle East

As part of my mechanical engineering course I was spending three weeks in August 2008 aboard M/T NORD MERMAID, an oil carrier operated by Dampskibsselskabet Norden, Denmark.
I met the ship in Genoa, Italy where the journey to Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates started carrying a cargo of fuel oil.

Ship's approximate route. A distance of about 4160 nautical miles.

Leaving Nord Mermaid. A sad goodbye to the ship and its crew after an eventful trip.

Nord Mermaid in the middle between two other tankers. More than 100 ships were anchored here and ships were going everywhere all the time.

Palace in the desert.
Power pylons in the desert.
I got to spend a few hours in Dubai before flying home.

Not much to report from Gulf of Aden. This is where the pirates are supposed to be, but we haven't seen any.

Instead we met the biggest container ship in the world today. Almost 400 meter long Elly Mærsk.
